World-renowned Wax Castle Celebrations heavily modified this year

Seems as if it was done mostly for the cameras this year, much was available for live viewing and is permanently available online

This magnificent wax castle is made to pay homage to the lord Buddha on Okpansa Day or the end of Buddhist Lent.

Nobody knows exactly when this festival began, but it is believed that it started around the time of King SUWANNAPINGKARA, the first King of Nong Han Luang Kingdom, Now Sakon Nakhon.
At the time, people made castles in remembrance of their ancestors, to make merit and to show unity of the people in the region. They chose to make castles because they believed that when they died they would go to heaven and live there. The festival has become the most important tradition in Sakon Nakhon and is famous all over the country. It is not only the time local people get together but the Tourism Authority of Thailand now also recognizes it as one of the greatest reflections of Thai culture in this area. Each temple makes a castle with the help of the parish and the Municipal Council. Each castle starts off as‘;a wooden model and then the wax is skillfully curved into a very nice Thai fine art style and molded and struck onto the model. Local schools make floats and participate in the processions
