AC DRY Mode when the humidity is high

Started using the dry setting on my air con during late afternoons and evenings, when the humidity is at its highest.

Today's high is expected at 34C, while the feels like temperature is expected at 42C. Using dry mode or a dehumidifier can lower the temperature by eight of more degrees

Two questions answered by ✧ Gemini
1️⃣. Advantages of using Dry mode over cooling mode
2️⃣. Advantages of Dry setting vs portable dehumidifiers

1️⃣ Using Dry Mode instead of standard Cooling Mode offers several key benefits, particularly when the main issue is mugginess rather than extreme heat:

1. Superior Dehumidification Efficiency ⚬ Dry Mode: Forces the internal fan to run at its slowest speed across an intensely cold evaporator coil. The slow airflow gives humid indoor air maximum contact time with the cold surface, causing moisture to condense and drain away rapidly. ⚬ Cool Mode: Prioritizes moving high volumes of air quickly to drop the room temperature. This rapid airflow often blows moisture back off the coil before it has time to condense and drain outdoors.

2. Lower Electricity Consumption ⚬ In Dry Mode, the compressor runs intermittently in short cycles, and the fan stays on low speed. ⚬ Because it targets ambient moisture rather than driving the temperature down aggressively, power draw can be significantly lower than running standard Cool Mode on moderate days.
3. Eliminates the "Cold and Clammy" Feeling ⚬ On rainy, overcast, or mildly warm days, Cool Mode can quickly satisfy the thermostat setting and shut off before removing enough humidity. This leaves the room feeling chilly, damp, and uncomfortable. ⚬ Dry Mode prevents overchilling while stripping moisture, making the air feel crisp, light, and comfortable at higher, more natural room temperatures.
4. Quieter Operation ⚬ Because the indoor blower fan operates strictly at its lowest speed, air rush noise is virtually eliminated. This makes Dry Mode especially well-suited for sleeping, reading, or working.
5. Reduced Risk of Mold and Dust Mite Growth ⚬ By prioritizing rapid moisture extraction over sensible temperature drop, Dry Mode helps keep indoor relative humidity below the 55%–60% threshold where mold spores, mildew, and dust mites thrive. When to Choose Dry Mode vs. Cool Mode ⚬ Use Dry Mode: Rainy days, early mornings, overcast weather, or whenever the room feels sticky/clammy despite not being overly hot (typically below 30°C / 86°F). ⚬ Use Cool Mode: Blistering, sunny summer afternoons when the primary objective is rapid and heavy temperature reduction.

2️⃣ Running an air conditioner in Dry Mode offers several key advantages over using a standalone portable dehumidifier:

1. Automatic Condensate Drainage ⚬ Air Conditioner: Water stripped from the air drains automatically outdoors through the unit's condensate line. ⚬ Portable Dehumidifier: Moisture collects in an internal reservoir bucket that must be manually emptied several times a day unless you hook up an external gravity hose or pump.

2. No Excess Indoor Heat ⚬ Air Conditioner: A split or ducted AC pumps the heat outside via its external condenser unit. The room either stays neutral or experiences mild, pleasant cooling. ⚬ Portable Dehumidifier: Both the cooling coil (evaporator) and the warming coil (condenser), along with the compressor motor, sit inside the room. As a result, portable dehumidifiers blow warm exhaust air directly into the space, typically raising the room temperature by 1°C to 3°C (2°F to 5°F).

3. Space Saving and Aesthetics ⚬ Air Conditioner: It uses wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or ducted hardware you already have installed, taking up zero floor space. ⚬ Portable Dehumidifier: These units are bulky, take up floor space, and require clearance from walls and furniture to maintain adequate airflow.

4. Quieter Operation Inside the Living Space ⚬ Air Conditioner: In split-system units, the loudest component (the compressor) is mounted outside. Indoors, only the low-speed fan runs, making it very quiet and suitable for sleeping. ⚬ Portable Dehumidifier: The compressor and fan are self-contained inside the living space, producing continuous humming and airflow noise.

5. Energy and Equipment Cost ⚬ Air Conditioner: Dry mode runs the fan on a low setting and cycles the compressor gently, consuming noticeably less electricity than standard AC cooling mode. It also avoids the upfront cost of purchasing and storing an additional appliance. Where Portable Dehumidifiers Still Win While Dry Mode is convenient, portable dehumidifiers have two distinct strengths: ⚬ Precise Humidity Targeting (Humidistat): Dehumidifiers allow you to set an exact relative humidity (e.g., target 50% RH). AC Dry Mode generally regulates based on temperature cycles rather than exact humidity readings. ⚬ Cold Weather Performance: If the room is already cool (such as during cold or rainy spells), Dry Mode cannot run effectively because cooling the room further causes the indoor coil to freeze or makes the space uncomfortable. A standalone dehumidifier works well in cooler temperatures without overchilling the room
