The Price of Rice in Thailand 'going up'

Three words which are being used more often these days on a variety of subjects.    Thai crops to suffer worst drought in  15 years  | Reuters   The worst drought in a  decade  continues in Thailand: Bangkok in danger of severe water shortage Six out of 40 provinces remain affected by the drought, DDPM reveals  Chiang Mai experiences worst drought crisis in  20 years   Thailand Faces Worst Drought in  50 Years  | OOSKAnews Water runs out for 250,000 households in metro Bangkok and north | Coconuts Bangkok  Soldiers asked to enforce pumping timetables | Bangkok Post  Road collapses in Pathum Thani | Bangkok Post Keep in mind last year's headlines proclaimed worst in decades. The drought and the resulting water shortages in Thailand is going to get worse.   Much of the drought is blamed on El Niño.  Equal (or more) blame should go to deforestation.    Let's not forget poor government management.  Droughts and floods have plagued Thailand for ages.  Much of the damage could be diminished by constructing more reservoirs and canals Locally the drought is a patchwork. If you drive through the province you will see some lush green ricefields outnumbered by dusty 'wasteland.' I suspect water tanks are selling well. There seems to be no imminent danger of Sakon Nakhon city tap water being shut off.  Nong Hahn water levels are low, but not yet dangerously.  Thai meteorologists have assured the public that the rainy season will start late this year but will arrive in early August.

A heavy rainstorm arrived in Mukdahan before we did.   By the time we arrived it was just drizzling.  Drain pipes where overflowing, spilling water on low lying streets and fields.   With the field drenched there was plenty of slipping and sliding adding an occasional comedic moment. The Sakon Nakhon goalkeeper had been replaced for this game.  The replacement foiled all goal attempts by Mukdahan.  It was a good game, but from the looks of things I thought both teams were going from this game with a draw.  Then in the last ten minutes Sakon Nakhon scored
