When you get lemons, you make lemonade

When Sakon Nakhon gets floods,

Sakonnakhon'ians go fishing

Canal water levels have lowered slightly since yesterday
Many side streets, were new construction has blocked the normal water-flow, are flooded.
Grazing field have become lakes

Rainy Season is Back

Heavy rain storms yesterday morning arrived with a mini tornado as a precursor.

Unsubstantiated (heard it from a friend)
"Strong winds caused fallen displays at some EXPO shops. One person needed hospital treatments for cuts suffered from falling objects."
In other parts of town store awnings were ripped from buildings by high winds

According to Thai Meteorology Department we had 103.5 mm (4") rain during the early morning hours

6 foot wide covered walkway during the heavy rains

During the heavy rains many streets were flooded, some impassible.

By 11:30 canals had recovered, most city streets were passable.

NOTEWORTHY is the fact that this storm was locally generated

Took a little Trip down Hemorrhoid Alley

South where ITU (road) ends and the traffic lights have been stuck in yellow for over a week.

Folk know they can cross cautiously on a flashing yellow light.  When it's not flashing, they sit there waiting for the light to change... for a very long time.

Once you cross the intersection, you're in farm country

It's where "Hemorrhoid Alley" begins

Wanted to see if canals were ready in case of Flooding Episode 2

Heavy rain intermission

ends this weekend

Sakon Nakhon F.C. vs Roi Et F.C.
Wednesday, July 31, 2013 15.00 p.m.
at the United Institute of Maha Sarakham campus stadium.

I'd been asked:
Is this month's the worst flooding in Sakon Nakhon City? EVER!
I can only confirm the ten years I have lived here and say it is.

In August of 2008 flooding in the city was limited to a few places

Outlying areas fared worse.

Don't remember much flooding in my vicinity in 2012.
There was some heavy flooding elsewhere Obviously!

Most Sakon Nakhon city canals were built decades ago.  They sufficed then.
There's been a hell of a lot of home and business construction since then.
Lakes have been paved over, streams have been blocked.

Flood Cleanup

Had intended to visit some nearby villages to witness how they were faring.
A short distance from my house the water was a foot deep. Killed my motorcycle engine.
Subsequently I killed my battery.
I should get my motorcycle back shortly after noon with a new battery (480 baht).
Instead I walked around the neighborhood in my "Wellingtons"
They are too large for my feet without socks, causing a few blisters.

I thoroughly washed and disinfected my feet when I got home.

The Water level was receding.  In some places faster than others

Water pumps were used and shared everywhere

Most folk seemed in good spirit

Many homes were still awaiting their turn to used water pumps

Road markers had been installed
to advise drivers

The recently paved road in front of my house was above the surrounding water levels
 avoiding flooding

Recently paved but already cracked
