Sakon Nakhon Loi Kratong 2012

Sakon city dwellers will be heading for the lake park en-masse.

Thais believe that floating a kratong (raft) will bring good luck, and they do it to honor and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha.

The Loi Kratong Parade is generally around sunset.
The parade delivers a royal kratong to the waterfront
I'll update time information later in the day.

This is also the day for the release of the Thai fire balloons, AKA sky lanterns.

Loi Krathong Celebrations start early

Loi Krathong is still weeks away, yet fireworks seem to be on sale already.
They've been going off for the past two days, early mornings and late night.
I don't mind them all that much, but my two dogs sure do.
Thunderstorms or fireworks and they want to hide behind the washer or under the bed.

Generally most ma and pa stores display legal fireworks on the sidewalk.
Quite often you can find a bigger bang for your money, but it's not openly displayed.

Local Loi Krathong celebrations begin with a parade from the city monument to the lake park.
While revelers float their Krathongs on the lake throughout the evening

  • "...the act of floating away the candle raft is symbolic of letting go of all one's grudges, anger and defilements, so that one can start life afresh on a better foot.

Headlines that caught my attention

Plenty headlines regarding the rise of prices for both rice and sugar.  Both prices continue to escalate.
'Sugar premium up as much as 44%' reads one of the latest headlines

Photo Op Day at Rajabhat University

.
I had been invited to come and take graduation pictures at Rajabhat University.
It took five phone calls to finally meet the person who had requested my attendance.
The crowds were massive.

This wasn't graduation day, that will be later this month.  This was graduation photo day.

Two tents were set up for group photo's.
As one group left the area, the next group took up their positions

Back in town, preparations are under way for this evenings Loy Krathong parade and celebrations.
Floats were parked in front of flower shops for final touches of decorations. Krathong sales displays can be found on many sidewalks.
The parade begins at 6 PM.
