Sakon Nakhon New Year: Cool

Easterly winds began to cool temperatures shortly
    after sunset, yesterday.

    Ahead:
    A night of 10 C, feels like 9 C,
may be the coldest night of this cold season.

To date: no rain in sight through January.

Drought conditions and fire dangers expected to increase

My observation:
2012 was the driest year in the past 10 years in Sakon Nakhon

Patana School Alumni Party 2012

According to Thai time keeping,
when an event is supposed to start at 6 pm,
you wont be late if you show up an hour or so later.
The first person to welcome me recognized me
from attending a similar event two years ago. I immediately felt 'at home.'

The food was superb. The service flawless. By the fourth course I could only look at the food, I was pleasantly full.
Sitting at a table for eight, there was more than enough to eat for five persons
The school fundraiser had raised ฿300,000 by the start of the event.
The school celebrated it's 34th year

The entertainment was quite enjoyable and enhanced the evening.

Behind the stage, dancers were awaiting their turn

Friends, smiling and plenty of posing

I followed my horoscope for the day:  "
Go with the flow, you're not in charge here, relax and enjoy."
I had a great evening out

At home it was a different story.
The neighbors were 'practicing setting off car alarms with fireworks,'
It's going to get noisier !!

Sakon Nakhon Children Days past

In Thailand Children Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in January
Sat, January 12, 2013
  • One year I was asked to purchase fruit drinks, milk, cookies, candies, and a few toys.
Think the entire bill came to one or two thousand ฿
We spent a few hours at the government hospital children ward.
It's somewhat of a feel good memory. Kids and their parents with grateful smiles.

  • Another year  Thai friends invited me along to a poor village school, where all kids received a hot meal, and cookies and ice cream.

  • Another year it was a neighborhood celebration.
By the time I arrived, the kids had already indulged in free candy. You could tell they were getting a bit hyper.

Presents included a 20 Baht note. Some kids lined up for seconds

Then it was on with the show

After the show I went to visit the older kids, admiring a new toy

Just like mothers day or fathers day, kids (and kids at heart) look forward to being pampered that day.

Fuel Economy

Christmas is over, Happy Holidays

Most of Christmas day I spent "down and out (of it)," not ill, just exhausted
Took two days to recuperate.

Just in time for a replay of an event I really enjoyed last year.

Sakon Pattana Suska School Reunion
It's a Thai family social event, just before the New Year.
Family and plenty friends

Then comes the New Year

My new Year tradition: I stay within a three minute staggering distance to my mattress.
No road checks! Just Thai family and friends.
Wish you the best of everything in 2013. And hope 13 is your lucky number.

Caution:Too many parties and road checks ahead

Dec 23 Christmas dinner party at Apples
Dec 25 Christmas luncheon at the Pit Stop Cafe
Dec 25 Christmas dinner party at Tippy's

Add to that private Christmas parties, birthday parties, and weddings.
All before the end of the year.
It's the first year in my memory that I have to decline a number of invitations.
Guess I'm not as young as I used to be

Special caution:

Police road check points are up all over town (and nationwide) with breathalyzers.
Anything over one beer can get you into serious trouble if you are driving.

Special mention:

Anton aka German Tony, who had been quite ill recently and bedridden, has recovered and updated his

The light shop next to Dan's Apple was busy building a Christmas Nativity.
Think this must be a Thai version:  CD inside instead of a star on top.

On the way home this evening, I spotted a mile high kite.
That's the stadium lights on the left

Star Maker, The Sakon Nakhon Version

If the words Star Maker bring to mid Hollywood and movie stars,
then you haven't been to Sakon Nakhon
Many shops are busily repairing last year's stars or making new ones.
The shop next to Apple's Restaurant is doing brisk business at the moment

Of course those stars look much better after sunset
