Norwegian Icebreaker Heads Up the Mississippi River
As you may have seen on the news, it's been very cold in Minnesota. So cold, in fact, that the US Corp of Engineers has borrowed a Norwegian Icebreaker to clear the Mississippi River for freighter traffic. The Icebreaker is starting near Winona and working its way northward. Here is a picture as the hard work of ice breaking begins.

Thai Election Preparations
Thai police, military set to reclaim occupied gov't offices
starting Feb. 3 "...30 private firms it earlier blacklisted for supporting protesters..." |
Interesting to note are the 2007 election results
Chinese New Years Celebrations Begin
Even though the traditional schedule for the Chinese New year is 31 January to 2 February,
Sakon Nakhon Celebrations begin this evening,
30 Jan, according to this post
How to shop for a birthday present
That's Ning and her sons Mack and Mike (M&M).
Mack has the severely trimmed haircut. Such haircuts are generally an indication that someone in the family died. In this case it was an Uncle.
M&M left saying they were going to the store, apparently to pick up a birthday present.
They didn't go to the store, they were gone well over an hour.
Instead they went to the fair throwing darts until they had their mothers birthday present
Headlines and my Thoughts
Increasing the police presence in Bangkok can only be effective if police are given instructions to intervene and apprehend criminal activity, instead of the present policy.
Suthep and his deep pocket supporters are doing it all wrong. 'Peaceful' demonstrations are opportunities for nut-jobs with cocktails, pistols, riffles, and grenades. Changes are best made from within the established government and legal system↓.

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 60
1.. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
2.. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.
3.. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.
4.. Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level)
5. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Thailand Headlines of Note
Thai tourism could stall
No Doubt about it. What I do doubt: the ministry had forecast tourist arrivals would reach 28 million in 2014. |
Monday, January 27, 2014
The notice was given to farmers in the Chao Phraya river basin.
Isan farmlands are bone dry. The only spring planting will most likely only be where farmers have their own water supply.
At this time there is no rain in the extended forecast thru March.
The area has had no measurable rain since October.
Cold Season has taken the express out of town
This week should be pleasant as far as temperatures are concerned.
Next week may be a whole different story. I am almost finished cleaning the pool in anticipation
These guys are also back
Not the American Eagle
I still got it

Today's Engrish Lesson
Engrish slang term for the misuse of the English language by native speakers of some East Asian languages
Post by Weird Asia News.
Recently read that only 30% of rice collected by the government has been paid for.
If that number has not changed it means 70% of the farmers have not been paid.
No money in the government till apparently.
Banks have offered loans at 7% interest based on pending government payments, (expected when what freezes over).
With a worldwide overstock of rice on hand, harvest income in the years ahead is going to be reduced.
Not helping the situation is the present climate. Cold weather results in immature rice, empty husks.
Even during better times, ricefarmers supplement their income mostly by working at construction projects. Construction in this area has been booming for a few years.
Now many available houses and 'Shop Units' sit empty. Many overpriced (for this region).

They're Ready for the Fair
Yesterday I stopped by and watched final preparations for the Fair opening.I't not so exciting to me as in past years.
Used to be able and sit down with a cool drink and watch the world go by.
These days Alcohol ห้าม (prohibited) at most public events.
They used to have bumper car rides. They have been gone for a number of years.
At the Red Cross 'fish tank' I did get greeted: "Hello Mister Hans"

Security Hightened
Was at a couple of shopping centers in Udon today.
At one of the shopping centers, the undercarriage of the car was checked with mirrors at the entrance to the parking area.
All cars entering had to pop open their trunks for a visual inspection before being allowed to preceed.
It was very obvious that there was a lot more security throughout.
Possibly the Udon shooting had something to do with the increased security
Even though the shooting may be politically motivated, it may also be of a personal nature
