That time of the year in Thailand: Burning season

But wait, it's not just common practice in Thailand.  It's common practice with the majority of rice cultivations around the world.  Definitely most cost effective.  Plowing the rice straw under is not a good alternative.  The stuff does not decompose quickly, and when it does it emits methane gas. Alternatives are still being pondered with considerations to insure that rice does not become a luxury item.
