Booze Radar Engaged

Songkran Day Two
The effects of the previous day's overindulgence were quite noticeable in the morning.
Not a hangover, just a general Blah and rundown feeling.
Electrolyte and plenty of water helped resuscitate me.
I was in no way interested in participating in the public water frolics on that day.
My neighborhood was eerily silent all day.  Hardly anyone home anywhere.

Different story on Songkran Day Three

Temperatures rose quickly and early.
Great day to jump into the pool and do the cleaning from within.
Clouds started rolling in around 1 PM, but it was still hot and humid.

I sent one of the locals shopping to refresh my supply of ice and drinks.
Before the resupply was accomplished, 17 people were on my front porch.
Booze Radar!!  Booze Radar Engaged!!

It was a quick revelry, everyone departed for the "battle zone' within the hour.

House cleaned, pool cleaned, we headed out for the wet celebrations in town.  Parked at the 'main temple' parking lot and started walking.

Back at home my clothes bypassed the wash machine and went directly to the clothesline

Wireless USB internet

Mobile Internet Alternative

Bought my laptop early one  morning.
Did some initial exploration back in my hotel room.  Quickly got bored.
I needed an Internet connection to entertain myself.

As dusk set in I was headed to a nearby electronics store for a wireless USB internet connector.

The device was listed at Bt1,300, but discounted to Bt1,000.  Card included, with 40 hours for the first month.

The label on the case states mobile broadband, another label states 3G.  Once you plug it in, you realize it will outrun a snail, but that's about it.

Try to watch a short on-line video, and you'll have to give it some time to load. I finished my second drink before a ten minute video played in full.

Your high speed gadget can only go as fast as the service provider equipment allows.
Thailand's broadband started to gain momentum in 2007.  New users are added at an estimated 30% growth per year.  Upgrades to the system have repeatedly been delayed due to political and legal maneuvering.
Maybe this year, maybe next.. They've been saying that for a few years!

For correspondence (text), the mobile service is great.
I was really amazed by the speed when uploading pictures.  It was actually reasonable.
General surfing speed was acceptable when avoiding video files
Mobile devices are available by the hour or unlimited monthly rates.

Must be that Season again! Birthdays!

Birthday Party yesterday! Birthday Party today!
Last night's dinner and beer was a one minute bike ride from my house.
Tonight's party is a few miles down the road, at Martin's Chern Chim, where they will undoubtedly sing the Oom-pah pah version of Happy Birthday.

Sakon FC 3 - Udon FC 3 -- Another Cold Front

It was probably one of the best games I've seen in the years I've been following Sakon FC.
The crowd was 'pumped' till the very last moment.

Both teams needed a win. Sakon FC had won one and lost one. Udon FC had lost two games.
5:10 pm
By halftime Sakon was in the lead: 1:0. But that changed within seconds after the start of the second half. A Sakon player received a yellow card and Udon took advantage of the free kick.

Both teams seemed evenly matched, however Sakon players did not take more advantage of the Udon goal keeper, who seemed to spend more time in mid-field, frequently leaving the Udon goal unatended.

Another cold front headed this way

If you look at  The Weather Channel you can see another cold front heading south from China.
It's a bit early to say with any certainty, expect temperatures to drop Wednesday
This one may not be as cold as we recently experienced.
Around my neighborhood there are some real "diehards," they were in my pool on the coldest days.

Heard it...

I'm away from my desk...

After extremely hot temperatures on Monday and forecasts indicating continued hot weather for the rest of the week, the sudden drop in temperatures came as a real surprise.
All forecasts for local weather were changed overnight, with cooler temperatures for the rest of this week.
Weather forecasting isn't an exact science.

I'm away from my desk for the remainder of the week.
No updates to this blog until Monday, March 14.
A few days in Bangkok, then off to explore Korat.

Next major event is next month. Songkran, the Thai New Year.

Time to Rock

Democratic Football or Vote buying exercise?

Sakon FC has been training every evening in preparation for today's game.

Sakon FC lists starting time as 5PM, while Mukdahan has schedulled the game to begin at 6 PM.

That's a minor controversy compared to rumblings among some players.

Seems they were handed slips of paper and were asked to vote on a starting line-up.
Isn't that the coaches decision, to select the best qualified, rather than putting it out for a vote?
Is this for real, or was this just a teamwork exercise? Vote buying exercise?

By 2 PM players were still in the dark regarding today's lineup
The first game of the season will be important to both teams.  Proof in the pudding is in the eating

Fair Night

An hour before the nightly concert begins foot-traffic peaks.
Concert goers are making their way through the leisurely fair goer crowd.
One hand on my wallet, the other on my camera.
Plenty of uniformed security was reassuring.
At the concert entrance, opened juice and soft-drink bottles were sniffed to insure a ALCOHOL FREE FAIR
You could say this night was teenage concert night

Mobile catering at the main entrance to the fair, seemed to be quite lucrative

I still  GOT IT

One of my favorite spot to visit is the air rifle range
I was somewhat of a marksman during my military career (1963-1975).
Makes me feel good that I still got it.

The rifle had been used all day and was overdue for a cleaning.
It jammed after every shot and had to be cleared and reloaded.

I was told I'm doing it all wrong.
Five bullets, five targets.
I explained I wanted to see how closely I could bunch them together.  I received an approval nod.

Before arriving at the fair I attended a
family birthday dinner at one of the newer 69 Baht all you can eat restaurants.

Something new for me on the menu.  Glass noodles made from seaweed.
Crunchy noodles.  I got to get some of those.

Amazing Thailand: Enjoyable Recollections

Chapter 1

There's nothing more enjoyable on a vacation to Thailand than a random drug test.
I experienced one during my vacations back in the 1990's.
A night at a Bangkok disco with some friends.

Houselights were turned on, announcements in Thai, I didn't understand a word.
I had no idea what was going on, except for the fact that there where dozens of uniformed police standing by the door, and everyone seemed to head toward the exit.

Passport in my hand, I made my way through the crowd to the main exit.
A policeman personally escorted me back to the toilets, handed me a cup, and made sure that I filled it with my own...

My plumbing gets shy when people are watching.
The policeman was earnest and getting impatient.
Finally I was able to perform the required task. Now the fun really started.

Satisfied, the policeman directed me to the end of the line and disappeared.
A few hundred people ahead of me, all holding these shallow, easily crushable paper cups.
The cups weren't much larger than those they serve butter and jam in for breakfast.

With people lining up behind me, I was now in a mob of a few hundred people, all pushing toward a single door exit.

Many people where holding their cups above their heads in order to avoid being bumped into.
It didn't help,  the yellow smelly stuff got spilled all over.  There was a kind of mist in the air.

Empty cups were refilled right on the spot.  Expediency outweighed shyness.
Made no sense to return to the toilet and wind up at the end of the line.

Lot's of kind and understanding people, they had plenty, enough to help out their friends.
The way this stuff was being poured from cup to cup, you'd think we were in a champagne bar.
A Thai ahead of me turned and smiled: "Welcome to Amazing Thailand."
It was one of those fun Thai smiles you hear so much about.

I inched my way toward the door, holding my hand over the cup to avoid spray contamination.
I became a bit worried.
Would any of my prescribed medicine I had taken cause a positive test result?
I didn't follow a friends advice to carry copies of my prescriptions with me. just in case...

I was noticeably nervous while the attendant was performing the litmus test on my contribution.
I was tremendously relieved when my fortune was told: "Negative, you can go."

Those where the early days.  I suspect improvements have been made.  The exchange program has probably been abolished.

Phuket high season down

Tourism is down 25% from last year in Phuket, according to an article in the Phuket Gazette.
The last few years haven't been all that great for Thai tourism numbers.
Recent government reports contradict these findings, reporting a steady increase in arrivals.
Thailand's overall tourism numbers may be up somewhat, but the big spenders seem to be going elsewhere.

Governments tend to distort statistics for their own benefit.
A typical example is a recent US government finding that there has been no rise in the cost of living in the U.S. over the past year.
Makes you wonder where these people do their shopping.
