Heavy rains cause snakes to seek drier grounds

Haven't seen any snakes near my house in a year
Last time was Friday, May 20, 2011 eeeeeeekeeeek Really big Snake

With nearby fields turning into ponds, snakes are on the move
Heard it twice this week: eeeeeeekeeeek, eeeeeeekeeeek.
Both times they were smaller snakes.  I quickly disposed of the critters.
I've seen snakes and even scorpions roaming within city limits, especially during the rainy season.
Picture taken 12 May 2005 by Mr. Bob
It's something to be aware of.
They hide in the strangest places
I don't ask Thai friends to dispose of snakes.  Thais throw the snake over the fence, and of course those snakes become a problem again the following day.
I have not been able to confirm recent talk of the death of a westerner due to snakebite.  The incident took place in a village at the bottom of Phu Phan mountains.  The man was standing in a pool of water, may well indicate that the man was in a flooded rice field

Rainy Season Interruptus ends

Seven Days without rain during the rainy season

I had previously mentioned the increased chance of rain this weekend.
Yesterday:
(1) it looked like a heavy storm was coming from the east
(2) later in the morning a stronger weather system from the north pushed the easterly weather southward.

(3) the northerly weather system quickly lowered the local thermostat, allowing for a fery comfortable afternoon and pleasant evening. With less rain, compared to the avoided easterly system

Sakon FC:  So many near misses, but no cigar

Prior to the game I had predicted that it would not begin to rain until the end of the football game.
I was right.
Wished we would have had some heavy rains before the game.  Sakon FC seems to win when the turf is soaking wet.
Before the game I noted another former Sakon FC player, now a member of the opposing Nong Kai team (39).
Another severe setback: This guy is good. Gazelle comes to mind!
Start of the second half Sakon FC momentarily came to life. One near miss after another.
The crowd went wild for a while, but both the players and fans seemed to quickly loose all steam.
The game ended Sakon 1, Nong Kai 3

 Thai ministers gone Gaga
Gaga Defined dictionary.reference.com
1915-20 French origin:  excessively and foolishly enthusiastic, infatuated, demented, crazy
Lady Gaga performed in Bangkok on May 25
Within a few days the Commerce Ministry's Intellectual Property Department complained to the US Embassyexpressing disappointment of her tweet wanting to buy a fake Rolex in Bangkok.
I'm certain that complaint received priority attention at the U.S. Embassy
More recently the Culture Ministry has made international headlines with his complaint to the local police department, of the inappropriate use of the Thai flag during her performance.  A flag  was fastened to the rear of her motorcycle.
Really !! What did they expect from a woman who does bizarre things to get media publicity.Wearing hamburger as a dress comes to mind.

Sport Day

 Sport Day Parade on I.T.U.

Heard the marching drums in the distance.  By the time I arrived, the first 100 yards of the parade had already passed me by.

Sakon Nakhon Cowboy

A story I love to tell over and over.

The Day 'Cowboy' drove his tractor from Tha Rae into Sakon City to visit Ned's bar

Feb 4, 2007
According to the manufacturer, the tractor can achieve 40 kph
legal highway speed is 90 kph

That was not the speed 'cowboy' was doing. He was on a leisurely cruise.

No drivers licence required in Thailand to drive farm equipment.

As cowboy tells it, when he passed through a police road check at Ban That Intersection, the cops sure gave him a stare...

"...like they were contemplating a reason to stop him and check his papers, but they just couldn't think of any."
I would have loved to have photographed the expressions of the police officers

Great memories

 Rainy season?

Half way into the rainy season I clean out my water tanks, or rather I have it done.
Generally the tanks are refilled with fresh rainwater within a day or two. Not this time.  No local rain during the past week.

Increasing CHANCE OF RAIN this weekend.

 Did you Know?

Today is World Blood Donor Day 2012

 Great memories of 2007

Dengue Outbreak in Sakon Nakhon

 Dengue outbreak in Sakon

Milwaukee Thailand ?  Never mind !!

According to Google translate there are Thai cities named New York, Boston, Chicago, and plenty more.
Phu Phan Mountains translated are the Rocky Mountains.
The translate service depends on user input/feedback.
While other language translations are improving due to user input, I suspect the Thai translation will lag behind for a long time to come.

 Electrical sparks require immediate attention

Sparks were flying just above the breaker box Friday morning.  I investigated.
Twenty-some  wires entered the box trough one hole. The hole with sharp edges, was maxed out.
There were wires in there, which should have bypassed the breaker box completely.
With the main breaker off, I had to gently pull wires out of the single hole and insert them into a second hole, all by flashlight.
I found the damaged wire, inspected and patched it temporarily.
Asked around to find an electrician who could replace the box.
Next thing I know I have the city light truck in front of my house.
They estimated it to be a one-and-a-half hour job.
Saturday, two electricians showed up on their normal day off.
I couldn't ask for better qualifications, than two guys working for city electric.
During the dis-assembly, they were astounded how shoddy the workmanship was.
Quite often they were chuckling and on the verge of hysterical laughter.

They worked nine to five, they'll be back Sunday morning to finish the job
