Drivers beware

Speed Limits within the province were recently reduced in hopes that this will reduce motor vehicle accidents.  There are some exceptions to the rules and apparently some older signs have not been removed.  On the highway coming into town from the drivers testing facility there are signs with different speed limits coming and going

Scattered Heavy Rain
Roads are always extra slippery during a first rain

Insure battery operated devices are charged
I mentioned 'clean your gutters' five days ago. Heavy rains in scattered areas mostly Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.

Engine fire onboard Bangkok bound flight February 2018

Smoke was noticed from the engine shortly after takeoff from Sakon Nakhon Airport.  The aircraft returned safely to Sakon Nakhon.
I was having a beer across the street from the runway, did not observe the plane landing, but heard the engine, which seemed louder than normal as the aircraft was reducing speed on the runway.

Seven Seven Seven Most Dangerous

The public relations campaign for the upcoming holidays 21 Dec to 10 Jan.  Three weeks, hence the title 777.  Drunk driving is most likely the most serious cause of holiday road carnage. After that it's speeding.
Enforcement of traffic rules, or the lack of it probably ranks high on this list. Times are changing, slowly.
First warning I received during my first year in Sakon Nakhon was as I entered a restaurant and the owner informed me the police had told him that I should slow down.  Fourteen years ago there weren't that many cars on the road.
The increase of cars came quite suddenly when the government offered 'discounts' for first time buyers.  Now thousands of previous motorcycle drivers became car drivers overnight with little or no training.

Almost half of all road deaths involve motorcycles

Even though the article's picture is Bangkok, that city is listed among 10 lesser death tolls

Movie streaming buffering problems
Search for  "internet speed test," run the test, check speed multiple times.  If it's not the speed you expected, contact your provider.
Buffering  can be a problem from your end or from the sending end. First you must insure your equipment is primed:
  1. Connect your computer by Ethernet to your modem. A wired connection is generally faster than wifi. During my own tests I gained double the speed when wired over wifi
  2. If you can't connect by ethernet move your computer as close to the modem as possible.
  3. Clean your browser history, including cookies. Alternatively use a different browser dedicated only to streaming without any unnecessary extensions.
  4. Clean out your computer startup folder.
  5.  Check your task / activity manager and disable any unnecessary functions
  6. Disable hardware acceleration in your video settings (right click on video).

Know your Thailand highway traffic signs

Tree branches are used on frequent occasions when highway warning signs are not at hand. When you find a tree branch on the highway in Thailand it generally is a warning sign that there is a broken down vehicle or a dangerous pothole.

What if a branch is attached to a string and moving down the highway?

Public activities toned down, but not the fun

The only thing toned down at this year's songkran festival were public events such as parades in many provincial capitals. Festivities went on as normal in most villages with parades and festivals, and of course roadside water throwing.

Meanwhile the road carnage seems to be slightly less than last year, but we are only into the third of seven festival days.  Statistics indicate the majority of accidents are caused by drunk driving and speeding

Equipment malfunction such as brake failure and bald tires also seems to appear quite often in the news.

Enforcing no riding in the back of pickups is not going to solve the carnage problem, it's just going to be an inconvenience for the poor wanting to go to work or to temples and school.
Statistics also indicate that the majority of accidents happen between 4 and 8 pm. This is the time when more enforcement should be on the road.  Enforcements seems to be reduced during these hours, as is apparent by motorcyclist driving without helmets after 5pm.
Confiscating vehicles from drunk drivers would quickly solve the drunk driving problem.  Speeding fines are too low to act as a deterrent.  But then that's just my opinion.
Happy Songkran
