Start of the Rainy Season ?

A heavy tropical thunderstorm hit the area shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday.
The rain was quite heavy and uprooted my mango and another tree.
Luckily I had spent the previous day removing a number of red ant nest from the Mango tree. We were able to upright the trees after the storm with only a few ant bites.

I had predicted the rain earlier in the day, but was off by 4 1/2 hours.

A number of visitors, who arrived moments before the storm hit, suggested that they may have to overnight at my house if the storm would last into the curfew hours.
Luckily the rains subsided within an hour.

SakonNakhon - Mai Phen Rai

The only violence I have seen during the past weeks has been on television. I have traveled daily through the city and surrounding highways. The only damage I had seen was caused by recent high winds. Some advertisement placards had fallen over.

The curfew did not seem to be rigorously enforced in my neighborhood.
There was light traffic throughout  the early evening.  Locals were informed to clear the streets by 10:30.
I've seen people walking home after midnight.  Obviously late night neighborhood parties have not been squashed.

The water level at the local lake Nong Han has receded, not unusual, seasonal average.
They've been discussing dredging the lake every dry season as long as I've lived here.
And they are discussing it again.  RYT9

And why should I make my own nest if I'm provided clean synthetic bedding ?

After a number of tries at subleasing their Restaurant - Bar,
Tony and his wife have decided to make it work on their own.
They had plenty of cleaning and painting to do for their reopening get together.

The old furniture was replaced.
Picture to the right was taken in  2007.

What's most impressive about the establishment is the cooking.

The omelets, red curry pork and potatoes, I had, were just unbelievably tasty.

SakonNakhon FC rained out at Yasothon

I was very tempted Sunday morning to drive to Yasothon on my motorcycle to watch the game
Glad I decided against that long drive on a very hot and humid day.
Yasothon Football field had been hit by a rainstorm and was totally unusable.
The match will be rescheduled at a yet undetermined date.

State of Emergency declared in SakonNakhon

The State of Emergency previously in force in 15 provinces has been extended to an additional five provinces, including Sakon Nakhon.  The announcement was made this evening at  approximately 6 p.m.

Other provinces include  Ubon Ratchahani, Maha Sarakam, Roi-et, Nongbua Lumpoo.

The state of emergency gives police and military increased authority to maintain law and order and prohibits gatherings of five or more persons.

Additional road checkpoints may be set up.
All persons should carry proper identification as required by law.  Foreigners must have their passports in their possession.

Access to some areas, buildings or highways may be closed to the public.

Red Ants on the move

They're on the move during the dry spells of the rainy season.  These red ants make their nests in trees.  They prefer big leafed trees and make their residence in clumps of leaves.
Simplest and least hazardous rousting is to use dish soap.  Two squeezes of the soap diluted in water.

When under thread, these speedy ants head to higher grounds.  Any ants on the ground will be up your legs heading higher.  I've had a few bite me in the back of the neck (and elsewhere).

If you're on dry ground pour baby powder (talc) on your feet and ankles.
If your feet are wet, spray dish soap around your feet, ankles and shoes.

I had wiped out three nests on the first day, but discovered two other red ant nest.  Then I discovered a nest of black "road runner" ants.  Those suckers can run, I'd guess 40kmph.

This time the bites did not cause me any  allergic reaction.  Local pharmacists have creams available to help reduce the inflammations, when needed.
