190510 Scientific approach to the 2017 Flood

Theres a study out of the Mahasarakham University about the 2017 flooding of Sakon Nakhon Province.  Much of the blame is directed at Tropical Storm SONCA, which dropped close to a foot of rain on the city.

Seems to me much of the flooding resulted when water was released from a dam for fear that it might burst. I might be wrong, but doubt it.

The article has a lot of higher learning jargon which make little sense to the average reader.
Interesting is the breakdown of two types of monsoons: southwest and northeast.
I'd correct the southwest to include west and northwest (as witnessed over the last few days).
The northeast monsoon generally starts around the Buddhist rain retreat

No serious drought this year! Seriously

If you're in the mood to reminiscence the flood of 2017, check out some of the recent uploads by sakonguide. There's also some videoes dating back to the year 2559.

Today, the second Saturday of the month, is Children day in Thailand, and of course the second day of the Red Cross Fair.
Attendance to these events for me it's still a maybe or maybe not. I'll probably take a hot pad on my chest and rest some more.

Took a short cruise on my motorcycle last evening, just to get out of the house.  Discovered real quick to keep the chill off my chest. I am starting to get accustomed to the cooler temperatures. Things should warm up a bit by midweek.

Prime Minister visits Sakon Nakhon

Low lying areas throughout the city are still flooded. This is the road to the hospital
The Canal has receded to its banks, it's full of trash and workers are removing garbage and sediment
Security along the waterfront and parts of the city was beefed up in anticipation of the Prime Minister's arrival

Smiles are catching
they spread like a virus

I survived the flood unscathed. The water level stopped 16 inches below my door.  Only loss was food in the refrigerator due two days without electricity.
I do have stacks of bricks in the yard I was ready to bring into the house to raise electric appliances off the ground.
Having experienced less devastating floods of 2011 and 2013, having a stack of unused bricks seemed a good precaution.
During the flood and after, all sorts of critters sought refuge and headed toward my doors.  Baby powder kept ants, cockroaches and other crawlies from taking up residence in my house.
Used powdered chlorine (pool use) sparingly on cemented surfaces to keep snakes and scorpions at bay.  Of course I only used it were it would not damage plants.
The call is out for donations to help the needy.  I don't donate to organizations.  Instead I help out friends in need. I've already done some of that and expect to do a bit more.
The most uplifting experience for me was to see all the people around me helping each other with a smile on their face.  Smiles are catching.

What do you do when the pasture turns into a lake?

You string out your fishing net

Flood danger has not passed

Water is receding at a much slower rate, there is continued fear that (lake) Nong Hahn will extend in size and reach parts of the city again.
Daily chance of rain still high, but nothing of major proportions as in past days

The flood of 2017, worst in at least a decade

June 25, 2017

9:30 AM July 28 overflowed 15 minutes after this picture
Uncovered my drain which serves many of my gutters. It's at a standstill and rising.  Got about another inch to go.  Probably in the flood zone by this afternoon
