Sakon Nakhon Red Cross Fair ends Sunday

Sakon Nakhon Red Cross Fair ends Sunday

Sakon Nakhon Phutai-Waritchapum Marathon February 19

in conjunction with the Nongkai Red Cross Fair

"...the La Nina phenomenon is expected to bring early rains and more storms this year."
My observation.  This year's La Nina developments are still undetermined.
Meteorological departments in various countries have varied calculations.
It will probably be another month or so before more accurate forecasts become feasible.

They're marching again

They call it Sport Day. Sometimes there is sport, sometimes there is not.
Probably the correct name would be Student activity day.

With so many parades, I'm beginning to wonder if its part of the school curriculum.

No complaint from me, but some of those costumes the girls wear, seem more appropriate in a nightclub than a teenage parade.

Sakon City Chinese New Year Celebration Finale

Not as packed as on the opening day,
but still a very respectable crowd.
They were playing American music when I arrived
Reminiscent of the swing band era

Was a bit windy, lamps were swinging
I was a bit concerned (unnecessarily)

Stopped of to see slides of "Old Sakon"
Received a few copies to add to my collection

Had some great food (shish kabob), great entertainment, chatted with friends.
The Chinese New Years celebrations  are always on the top of my list of things to do in Sakon Nakhon.

More video clips of the Suphan Buri fireworks disaster

.

Posted a previous video of a similar incident, earlier this month
That incident  in Hua Hin, was without injuries or property damage.

It's obvious that many of these 'technicians' are under-trained.
Spectators are well advised to keep a safe distance and "be aware!"
This also applies to the Bang Fai (Rocket) festival.
A few years back a spectator was decapitated by one of these rockets

Where were you when...?

This video is well worth watching and sharing

Sakon City Chinese New Years Party

Even though the road leading to the main event was blocked off, there were plenty of cars juggling in and out.

Motorcyclist where weaving through parked and moving cars.

Pedestrians had to dodge them all.

An old DODGE truck caught my eye.
"Cherry condition."
An 'out-of-towner obviously:
'Koh Chang Grand Cabana Hotel and Resort."

They were in the mid's of a Thai blessing ritual, when we arrived.

It was a 'Full House." (Crowded!)

We stopped off for a bowl of noodles and a drink at the "Bar Beer." Enjoyed the entertainment and did some people watching.

It's a three day event.
I'd better take my afternoon nap

Plenty last minute preparations at the Red Cross Fair

Heavy tropical rains for most of the morning delayed much of the preparations at the fair grounds.
It was obvious when I arrived shortly after noon.  Much still needed to be done.
Most likely there will be work going on late into the night.

The fair starts tomorrow.

Hot Season Sampler this week

Possibly the foggiest morning I have experienced in this town.
No rain, but water was dripping from the roof
Expect the heatwave  to make an appearance starting Tuesday.
After this heatwave expect a rapid drop in temperatures.  Nighttime low teens likely

Thai Children day or Armed Forces day?

This is Thailand.
Where else does the military put on a demonstration of their might and readiness for young kids.
Saw this video of children day in Surin and thought "What the Heck!"

On kids day you play kids games and pass out candy and toys, not induce nightmares!
Armed forces demonstrations are best done on armed forces day.

If you don't believe me, ask the kids in Chiang Mai who witnessed an Air Force sky diver fall to his death

Sakon Nakhon Children Day

Thailand Children Day is an annual event which takes place on the second Saturday in January.
There are government ceremonies, special children events on military bases and neighborhood kids parties.

Manager online (Thai script)  the subsidiary of ASTV has an article about the activities at the nearby military base, with a few pictures.

Some schools were in session for a student activity day, as in the video

A favorite Children Day memory is when I was asked to spend a few thousand Baht on snacks, fruit and drinks. We spent a few hours going through the children ward at the local government hospital.  Was a great feeling seeing all those sick kids smile.

Then of course there was the day in 2077, when I hung out with the older 'children' and their toys ♥

"O" becomes a (15 day) monk

Must have been quite a high ranking visitor at the temple this morning.
Plenty of uniforms (police, military), buses and government vans all over the place.
"Do you speak Thai?" A policeman approached me.
"Sorry No."
The policeman did understand "my friend" and "monk.' but he continued to linger near me till the convoy approached and the passengers were waving at me.
From that moment I was no longer scrutinized by dozens of policemen.

It had been raining before we arrived at the temple.
Wet tile was quite slippery.  Novices were tasked with mopping up.

Plenty of uniforms and security

Thailand Brand Name

First day back at school.  I teach English twice a week.
Didn't expect much on the first Monday in the new year.  Only two students had their textbooks.
Half the class hadn't recovered from the week long New Years celebrations.

A girl was texting on her mobile.  She tried to hide her phone when I approached her.
I asked her what the brand name was.
Blank looks from the entire class.
I explained 'brand names.'
She replied i-Phone.
I looked at her phone and questioned: "Copy?" She nodded in agreement.

Later, reviewing the hour's lessons, I again asked the class to name a brand name.
Almost in unison the class answered "COPY."

Sometimes lessons don't have the expected results

What did they expect?
Had the highest number of visitors to my blog yesterday after publishing the headline announcing the January 26 concert  "Big Ass - Body Slam in Sakon Nakhon"
Most likely a few disappointed visitors.  Probably even a few censors.

Two concerts on January 26. One at Ming Muang, the other at the Red Cross Fair.
Will be interesting to see if this town can support two concert events on the same day.
Most likely plenty out of town traffic
