Rain coming: when? how much?

. . take a guess

All weather services I check agree there is rain this week.
No one can agree on the severity, location, or timing.

Satellite images show little disturbances in the upper atmosphere.
I'd imagine any rain system will be a local creation.
The humidity overnight was quite high.
Usually before such rains you will notice a very high humidity.
When if feels like steambath, expect to take a shower

Tell me you're not chuckling

Super time with Super People

I had six events to choose from yesterday. A restaurant opening, auto show and OTOP fair, Apples Friday, a sold out dinner and live entertainment event, and private parties.
So don't say there's nothing to do in this town.

Colin's dinner party was the winner by a mile.  Had a really super time with super people.

The world can't even agree on Daylight Savings Time

Most American countries changed to Daylight savings time on 9 March.

In Europe that's happening this coming Sunday, 30 March.

The rule 'Spring ahead, Fall back' didn't seem to apply in Thailand.
Before daylight savings time I watched the evening news (6 pm) at six in the morning.
Now with daylight savings time I watch the news at five in the morning

Shack Shop

A number of complaints have been noted that the Shack Shop is difficult to finds due to lack of signage.
An immediate remedy has been promised.  Had not been there in quite a while, so I almost also missed it, had it not been that I spotted a familiar face.

Till the sign is in place look for the road sign as seen from the shop's entrance

Windstorm damaged Stupa repair underway

There's probably some reasonable explanation to my questions.
Why they stood around all day in discussions and poses and did the job in the cover of darkness.
  • Possibly it's of some Buddhist significance? I remember the house blessing, the first pillar was erected at a precise time
  • Or possibly they had to wait for the dignitaries to arrive

Cool spell ends

After the recent wind storms local temperatures had been quite cool and pleasant for the last few days.

Expect that to change with temperatures climbing back the low forties probably by mid week or the weekend
(High yesterday 26, today 32 to 34).

Weather is arriving from the west, where there seems to be nothing but clear skies and partly cloudy.

Temperatures approaching Songkran may well be in the low to mid thirties, but its too far in the future to state with any certainty.
Past experience, there has been at least one of the Songkran holidays with clouds and some rain.

Repairs to storm damage at my house have been concluded at a cost of nearly 10,000 baht.

A tree did fall on the second house without damage, just a big mess to clean up. No sunflowers survived the windstorm.

Sakon Nakhon Map now in English

My biggest complaint regarding Google maps of this area,
they were available only in the language of the region.
That seems to have been changed recently.

Having set up my own map from an older version of google maps, I now have to spend some time moving my markers. In the below example my football player seems to be a bit too far south

Most description windows are in Thai, by right clicking on the text it is translated to English. You only need to do that once. After that translation is automatic.

Drought Concern 2014

The last time the area saw any measurable rain was September of last year.
We are now half a year without rain.
General experience is that the rainy season begins sometime in May.
There is no concrete evidence if the rainy season begins on time this year and at what strenght.

To date 18 provinces have been declared drought areas.  Suggestions have been made to prepare water reserves for general consumption.

Water levels at the local lake are dropping slightly.  It will be interesting to see the levels around Songkran.
Water trucks delivering water to remote areas seem to be more frequent on the roads

Increased use of formalin raises local concerns

Source: Sakon TV Network

In an article posted on March 7, it is reported that excessive use of formalin to reduce food spoilage is under scrutiny by  The Provincial Health Office.

Formalin can be found naturally in most plant and animal life.

Ingestion of a small amount of formaldehyde is unlikely to cause acute effect, but ingestion of a large amount of formaldehyde can generally cause severe abdominal pain, vomiting, coma, renal injury and possible death

Examples of Foods Known to Contain Naturally Occurring Formaldehyde

                                      mg/kg
Banana                            16.3
Shiitake mushroom    100-406 / 6-54.4
Cauliflower                        26.9

Wash all food thoroughly

How to remove formalin from food

Interesting to note: Burning meat while barbecuing. increases formalin content.

Potato and Tukey Berries in my garden

Wonder how my 2 week old potato plants will do in this heat.

They are planted on the east side of the house, and thus are in the shade from late morning.

I did not cut/divide the origional potato, some potatoes have more than one sprout.

Temperatures in the sun have been a good indicator of feels like temperatures.

Temperatures in the shade are about 10 C less than in the sun.

These turkey berries are doing quite well, with a daily harvest for curry, stew, soup, and sauces
It has the potential to kill the germs and also acts as a medicine for cold, and also helps in problems related to the chest and stomach. And people who have diarrhea, stomach ache, piles, tuberculosis should use Turkey berry as a part of their food. And taking Turkey Berry regularly will help in strengthening the nerves. - See more at: http://www.anupamablog.com/health/turkey-berry-health-benefits#sthash.gVaHsCKq.dpuf
