Garden ediibles

Used to complain when people dumped their leftover food in my garden. In this case  new Thai pepper plant grew out of the food waste

I call them footlongs. The green beans are starting to bloom. The Thai version of green beans grow to 12 inches on the average

These are great with shrimp on sugarcane

Mosquito Control is in the news

I've had success with the bottle trap. I'm surprised there isn't a ready made kit 'just add water' available commercially. Electric zapper lights have little effect on mosquitoes. They prefer dark and moist.
For personal protection I prefer citronella oil. No toxins!

Sakon Nakhon Games 2016 Parade

The games weren't advertised all that well.
In fact when I first asked what's going on, I was told Provincial festival.

Sport activities were held for most of the day.

Had I known I would have attended there and avoided a bad experience

Weather arriving from the east at the moment.

TD5 (tropical Depression) is expected to head northwest according to wunderground
It's tentacles could reach us.  Then again TD5 might change directions??

Many weather forecasters are calling for heavy rainshowers with sunny intervals midweek through the weekend

"Use it or lose it."

It obviously accounts for body strength, to maintain it you exercise.
I've always been of the opinion the saying also applies to the brain.  That subject is making headlines at the moment.
Image for the news result

I had previously mentioned the purpose of this blog is 'brain exercise.'
Drugs, medication and other factors affect brain functions.
Fluoride is one of those proven factors.
"...  children who live in areas with highly fluoridated water have “significantly lower” IQ scores ..." huffingtonpost
Fluoride is destroying your brain:
Makes me a bit curious what effects toothpaste and drinking water have had on me.
And finally: when we die the brain can remain active for 3 to 7 minutes.  All depends whose research you read.  It explains a lot about those near death experiences of lights at the end of a tunnel and similar experiences.

Esarn Football Dictators in black suits

First of all let's be clear, at football games there are no posted signs forbidding the use of horns or whistles by fans.  In fact many teams sell horns to their fans to cheer their teams.
Occasionally you find these guys in black suits who decide to set up their own rules.  These are not published rules.  These are rules established by the black suits when they feel like it.
There once was a group of fans using guitars to cheer on their team with songs.  That was squashed by the black suits.  There have been incidents when the black suits politely asked not to use bullhorns or other noise makers.  At least they were polite about it.
This time the black suit just went too far.  The black suit had already advised a fan not to use the horn.  Minutes later the fan blew a whistle.  Again the black suit informed the fan the whistle was inappropriate.  So the fan stopped.
The black suit was not satisfied and sent a police force to confront the fan.  Four police officers surrounded the fan from all sides. It was time to leave.  Let's reiterate,  I have yet to see rules 'posted at stadiums' that fans should sit in silence.  I have heard comments that the noisemaker should sit on the other side, no protection from sun or rain.  In that case admittance should be free. It's not the team's doing, it's these Hitler like black suits who act like dictators.

They allow speaker systems so loud that I felt my trousers vibrate from the base. But fan noisemakers are forbidden. Yet road flares, which are more of a dangerous nuisance aren't questioned

No wonder attendance is sparse.
Rules should be universal at all games, published and posted, not made up by black coats who feel superior.

Travel Insurance

Thai Tourism Minister to discuss insurance cover for tourists
Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said this week that the ministry will invite representatives from the Airports of Thailand Public Company ...

Makes me wonder if she knows of the 'Thailand Travel Shield' travel insurance.
What should be on the agenda is a discussion to make it a mandatory obligation of all tourists as they enter Thailand. It's a requirement in many countries.
I'd like to see affordable coverage for senior expats living in Thailand.  What they call affordable coverage at my age is more than my pension

Next "No Alcohol Sales" day is August 7

I am unsure of the timing involved.
I recollect on previous voting days the no alcohol sales hours started at 6 pm the day prior. That was the case in June, 2011 according to a previous blog entry. Recommend keeping an eye on national news for announcements.

160719 Nine Balls

They are sacred and are generally covered with gold leaf.  There's always nine of them and one is larger than the rest.  Some sort of prayer beads? See them in many temples. So what's the purpose?

Legalize and supervise

Although sex tourism is outlawed in many countries, it continues to grow. "Over a billion served per year"
Totally outlawing prostitution seems impractical.  You simply create more criminals and unemployed
Registered, licensed and overseen, it's possible to control drugs, diseases and  wipe out child sex prostitution.  Of course it requires better oversight, that's why there is a registration fee.
As of 2014 Thailand was still considered #1 in the industry

Sakon Nakhon 7 3 7 win draw loose

Sakon Fc's best season was 2010 with a end of season standing in 8th place of 16 teams

For the moment Sakon FC (SKFC) is in 8th place of 14 teams, with nine games remaining in the season.
There is a good chance that the team advances above the upper half of 14. The weak point is away games and "# of goals for," during each game.

Sakon FC at Surin FC 1 - 1

No one seemed sure of the outcome.  Odds were listed at 3/3 win/draw/lose.
Hearing that the team arrived in Surin the day before the game, I was sure a loss was unlikely.

Next Sakon Nakhon hosts Roi Et. Sakon FC beat them 3 -1 on their own turf April 30.  Sakon FC also beat Roi Et on February 7, but the season was suspended and restarted, so that game is not on any scoreboard
Roi Et will be looking for revenge.  Both teams are fairly equally matched
Of the eight Sakon Nakhon home games there were six wins, one draw and one loss.  The other six losses were all away games

We were great friends

Thai tradition commands that each house must be feng shui. No bed near a window,  don’t let a mirror face your bed, the toilet must not face the toilet door.

I used to go to Colin's restaurant early, before the crowds arrived.  That way I had him all for myself.  Quite frequently I got to taste test a new drink that he was concocting.
This particular day he was fuming mad when I arrived.  He wanted a toilet installed in a tiny room for the upstairs guests.  Well, the Thais did it according to feng shui. The door opened just wide enough for a skinny person to squeeze through sideways. No chance that Colin could ever use that toilet. The door  hit against the toilet.
Toilets are not bolted down, they are cemented in place. The only way to take the toilet out was to demolish the toilet and cement.  Of course you have to buy a new toilet and cement.  I told him then, and a few other occasions,: "don't get so excited, it's not good for your health, get used to the Thai way."
Colin had years of cooking experience, his skills were superb.  He also had people skills.

Each time Colin came to town, he always stopped by my house with a gift, be it licorice, seeds or a small appliance. Without fail.
Over the years I had a few of my birthday parties at his restaurant. When I borrowed something from him, he delivered and picked it up.  He was a bit of a dreamer, some of his plans for the future seemed unlikely.

Thanks for the great memories.

Sakon Nakhon FC at Surin, Saturday, July 16, 6 pm,

A win is possible.
Much depends on the rest time after a 5 to 7 hour trip.  Update: Players left Sakon Nakhon on friday morning allowing for an overnight rest before the game
Surin is 12th in a league of 14, While sakon Nakhon is 8th
Next home game is Saturday, July 30 when Sakon Nakhon hosts Mukdahan.
This may be somewhat of a revenge game. Mukdahan previously won  1-0 over Sakon Nakhon, at Mukdahan

Locally: Rain should be tapering off a bit after this system has moved on.  Ocean temperatures in circled areas are hotter, most likely some high feels like temperatures, mid 40's C

What I learned in school today

Thai education system seems to be geared to supply the tourism industry.  Nothing wrong with that unless too much classroom time is used. These classes generally culminate in what's been explained to me as 'sport day.'
I do enjoy sport days.  Usually start with a parade with a variety of sport and entertainment competition

Sakon Nakhon Rainy Season sparse

Looking at the monthly forecasts through this rainy season, not as much rain forecast as one would consider plentiful.  But then weather patterns can change on a dime, at least I am hoping.

If the forecast holds true, well diggers should be high in demand later this year.
